Platform holders consider free-to-play games for consoles - 25 May 2009 |
But RuneScape developer Jagex warns that these ‘free’ games may come to consoles with a price-tag attached
The developer behind the world’s most popular free MMO is in discussion with the main platform holders in a bid to bring the free-to-play model to consoles.
RuneScape developer Jagex is aiming to turn console digital distribution services such as WiiWare, XBLA and PSN into platforms that can host free games. |

NFS Online Testing begins in March - 09 Feb 2009 |
Electronic Arts has announced that its Asia division will launch the first phase of testing for Need for Speed World Online this March.
Created by EA Black Box and announced last month, the title will be a free-to-play PC only game, where players can collect and customise characters and cars as well as compete for positions on online leaderboards. |

Double Tap Games formed from Helixes Ashes - 07 Feb 2009 |
Former members of staff from THQ’s recently dropped studio Helixe studio have formed DoubleTap Games.
Joystiq reports that before being dissolved, Helixe largely created DS titles for THQ’s movie licenses, including Wall-E and Ratatouille. Moving away from film tie-ins, DoubleTap hopes to focus on original titles for the DS.

Abertay joins TIGA - 17 Jan 2009 |
Abertay University has joined Tiga, making it the first Scottish university to sign up to the association.
As part of the membership, Abertay - which currently holds two of the four Skillset-accredited courses in the UK - will work in tandem with Tiga's Technology Group, which helps team up studios with university research groups - and will help the university closely tailor its course to the industry's needs. |

Sony Confident follwoing 40% rise in PS3 Sales - 17 Jan 2009 |
Sony has said it's confident of its momentum going in to 2009 following a rise in full-year PlayStation 3 sales of 40 per cent.
Over 3.6 million PS3 units were sold during 2008 in the US, with NPD data showing that 726,005 units were sold during December. |

Gary Dale leaves Take Two - 17 Jan 2009 |
Chief operating officer of Take-Two, Gary Dale, is leaving the publisher, with day-to-day duties ceasing immediately.

US Spent record 5 Billion in December - 17 Jan 2009 |
US consumers spent USD 5 billion on games, hardware and associated peripherals in December, according to the latest data from NPD.
The month recorded the highest revenues of any other month in videogame history, up 9 per cent year-on-year. Sales for 2008 overall were up 19 per cent, to USD 21.33 billion. |

Long-term partnership pairs PC hardware firm's PhysX with animation specialist's tools
Nvidia's Roy Taylor has told Develop that his firm - which cut its teeth and built a reputation as a supplier of PC hardware - has 'shaken up' its practices and is now targeting multiplatform games development via a new deal inked with British animation specialist NaturalMotion.
Under the terms of the deal, Oxford, UK-based NaturalMotion's v2.0 release of animation engine Morpheme will incorporate PhysX, Nvidia's recently-acquired physics technology it obtained as part of its purchase of Ageia earlier this year.
